When you have Virgin Media Fibre Broadband, you don’t need a phone line. We don’t use them in any part of our cable network, not even to power our landline service. However, if you’re with a different network that is FTTC (or Fibre to the cabinet), you probably will need a phone line, yes.

Standard fibre broadband, or Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC), is when a fibre-optic cable connects the network to your local area and a copper wire delivers the fibre broadband into your home. Our Virgin Media Fibre Broadband network is unique – technically, we’re a cable network, not FTTC – because we replaced the traditional copper wire with coaxial cable.

Compared to traditional ADSL, or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (an older type of broadband), fibre broadband can offer faster, more reliable speeds. Fibre-optic cables can send more information, as they’re made from glass or plastic rather than copper, and data is transferred more efficiently using pulses of light. Therefore, streaming is smooth on fast fibre broadband speeds, and more devices can connect to the internet at the same time.

Ultrafast broadband is at least 300Mbps fast (download speed). We offer three choices: our ultrafast M350, M500 or Gig1 Fibre Broadband package.

Superfast broadband is at least 24Mbps fast (download speed), according to the UK Government – or 30Mbps to 300Mbps, if you follow the definition from Ofcom and the EU. We offer two choices: our superfast M125 or M250 Fibre Broadband package.

Yes, some homes will need an engineer – we can come at a convenient time and install fibre broadband, usually, within an hour. However, our self-installation option may be available to you at checkout – with QuickStart the Virgin Media WiFi Hub just plugs straight in, so it’s often the fastest way to get up and running with our fibre broadband.
